Shadow Of The Colossus Pc Demo
I managed to arrange for a copy of the October edition of the US OPM to be sent to me and it arrived today, so I went home for lunch and popped the disc in for a quick go. I haven't really collected my thoughts into anything coherent, nor played enough to form much of an opinion beyond first impressions, but here's some random thoughts.I'm in love with this game. The graphics aren't quite as impressive as I'd hoped (although with such huge environments one can't expect God of War's level of detail), there's lots of texture sparkling and stuff (no mipmapping? Not sure), and the frame rate is decidedly dodgy in places, but this is the E3 demo build and big improvements have been promised.Gameplay and atmosphere wise it's exactly what you'd expect if you've watched any of the trailers or shaky cam footage that's been around since E3. I was lost in the atmosphere immediately, and if it had taken me any longer to beat the Colossus I'd have been late back for work because I couldn't put it down. I can't wait to play again tonight and do some exploring rather than riding straight to the Colossus' lair. The controls took a little getting used to (thankfully both sticks can be inverted on both axes) but perseverence pays off, and it's rewarding when you really start getting the hang of it.
Agro (your horse) is beautifully animated, and it's a joy to ride around the huge landscape.Apparently this demo is huge, with all sorts of nooks and crannys to explore, but there's only one colossus to defeat.I will hopefully be able to make an ISO of the demo disc (or just zip up the SotC demo if that'll work.?) either tonight or tomorrow if anyone's interested.Edited by Dr.Haggard at 14:59:59. Thanks for the input, it sounds great indeed.Dr.Haggard wrote:I will hopefully be able to make an ISO of the demo disc (or just zip up the SotC demo if that'll work.?) either tonight or tomorrow if anyone's interested.Oh, I'd be more than happy to download such an ISO from you!!! I don't think messing with the disk structure works, you need to re-patch the menu starting the demo since it will most definitely be relocated on the disk.A zip/rar archive of the whole ISO image is the safest way. I'm sure it's not the result of any great insight from actually playing the game when I say SotC isn't going to be to everyone's taste - if you love what you've seen in the trailers and game footage then you'll love the game.Like ICO a lot of it is atmosphere and exploration. If you don't love games where just the sense of being there is half the experience then you'll have trouble understanding what the fuss is about. Again like ICO, there is an almost palpable sense of melancholy, and part of the genius of both games is that the lack of any extended backstory or setting gives the world a delightfully enigmatic and foreboding atmosphere.Fighting the colossus is more difficult than I imagined, but that's partly due to unfamiliarity with the controls.
Your 'grip meter' runs out quite quickly, and I fell to the ground several times before I even made it passed his legs onto his torso, then after falling again I made it to his head. Once you're there this first colossus falls pretty easily. Personally I enjoyed every minute of it.Edited by Dr.Haggard at 15:30:00.

O/Thought as much.
I'll ISO the whole thing and stick it up somewhere tomorrow (could possibly have done it this afternoon if I'd thought to bring the disc back to work with me, oops! But I've got work to do anyway).
Bad news I'm afraid. The ISO is 4 gigs, and as such it's not at all practical for me to seed a torrent of it, much less upload it somewhere. If I had access to a dvd writer I'd be more than happy to post out a few copies, but mine went kaput a few weeks ago (PC won't even boot when it's plugged in) and I haven't replaced it yet, and we don't even have one at workIt's pissing me off cause I want to share this. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.Spent a good hour or more last night exploring the area in the demo, it's bloody huge, and I took down the colossus another two or three times. I'm far from bored of it yet, in fact it seems the more time I spend in the game the more I fall in love with it.Btw the magazine gave the game 4.5/5. I haven't actually read the review yet and I probably won't, so I don't know what they marked it down for.I'm really sorry if I sound like I'm rubbing people's noses in it, especially given that I've been unable to share the demo, that's not my intention at all./shuts mouth/explodes.

They took 6 of my US games for £26 each!! I'd only bought them for about £20 each 5 months ago!!
LOLRight, I had a go at compressing the iso last night, and at 50% complete (which had taken an hour) the rar was already over a gig, so needless to say I gave up on that idea. However, I should have my hands on a dvd writer this week, so I'll get some discs and assuming all goes to plan (and pending successful testing) I'll pop some copies of the demo disc in the post as soon as I can.Of those people who've replied to this thread up until now, anyone who can use the disc and wants one gets a copy. I'll keep you posted, and as soon as I've run one off and tested it successfully I'll give you my email address to send me your details.
